The effect of the cation- interaction on the sorption of cationic amines to montmorillonite

چکیده

Cationic amine functional groups are present in many pharmaceuticals, such as oxytetracycline and desvenlafaxine, which are increasingly released into the environment. Sorption, the accumulation of a chemical at the solid-water interface, influences chemical fate and human exposure. As such, this research focuses on cationic amine sorption to montmorillonite, an important component of soil systems. Past work with cationic amines suggested that more than one mechanism was responsible for sorption. Based on these findings, I decided to focus my project on determining the effect of the cation- interaction on the sorption of cationic amines. The cation- interaction (Figure 1) is an electrostatically driven intermolecular interaction between the center of the aromatic ring of one amine and the positive amine functional group (N and attached Hs) of another molecule.

Hexadecyl Trimethyl Ammonium Bromide-Modified Montmorillonite as a Low-Cost Sorbent for the Removal of Methyl Red from Liquid-Medium

In this study, montmorillonite (MMT) modified by a cationic surfactant (Hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide, HDTMA) was used as adsorbent to the removal of methyl red (MR) from aqueous solution. The effect of different parameters includes surfactant loading rate, contact time, pH, adsorbent dosage, and initial MR content was investigated on the sorption. The sorption capacity was increased by i...

جذب کادمیم از محلول‌های آبی به‌وسیله‌ کانی مونت‌موریلونیت طبیعی و مونت‌موریلونیت اصلاح شده با پلی‌اکریل‌آمید

This research was conducted to study the effect of natural and polyacrylamide-modified montmorillonite on the sorption of Cd from aqueous solutions. The sorption of Cd on the sorbents was studied as a function of pH (Cd concentration: 10 mg L-1) in the range of 4-8.5, and as a function of metal concentration (Cd concentration in the range of 1-10 mgL-1) using a 24h batch equilibration. Experime...

Sorption of aromatic hydrocarbons onto montmorillonite as affected by norfloxacin.

Effect of norfloxacin (Nor) on the sorption of 1,3-dinitrobenzene (1,3-DNB), and PAHs (naphthalene (NAPH), phenanthrene (PHEN) and pyrene (PYR)) to K(+)-montmorillonite was studied. Nor suppressed 1,3-DNB sorption due to their competition for the same sorption sites. 1,3-DNB was sorbed on K(+)-montmorillonite surface via cation-polar interaction and n-π electron donor-acceptor interaction. Nor ...

Adsorption of sulfonamide antimicrobial agents to clay minerals.

Adsorption of three sulfonamide antimicrobials to clay minerals was investigated as a function of pH, ionic strength, and type of exchangeable cation. Sulfonamide antimicrobial adsorption exhibited pronounced pH dependence consistent with sorbate speciation and clay properties. Sulfonamide antimicrobials did not intercalate into montmorillonite, and surface charge density influenced sorption by...
